This article will go over how to fit more plants into a small living area.
Bringing plants in to your home can really liven up your space, making it feel more cozy and more fresh. But what if you don’t have much extra space to spare? I have years of experience fitting as many houseplants as possible into a small apartment, so I’m here today to share all my tips on how to fit plants in small spaces.
The most important tip I have for fitting more plants in small spaces is to utilize all of your space vertically. If you just get big plants that have to go on the floor, you will run out of space pretty quickly. So how do you do this? The easiest way is to hang plants from the ceiling.
Of course, not all plants would make sense in a hanger, but many look great. Any vining plants, such as pothos and philodendron, look great with their vines cascading down over the hanger. I also love how big bushy ferns look in a hanger. This is a great way to add to add plants to your space without having to move any furniture, bring in a new plant stand, etc. And, if you’ve never installed a ceiling hook before, don’t worry- it’s super easy! Most hardware stores sell ‘self drilling’ hooks that can be installed with just a screwdriver.
Many plants are sold in hanging baskets, but you can also get a cute crocheted hanger to hang up a plant that is in any type of pot. Consider a hanger with spots for multiple plants, to truly maximize your space.
Rather than just hanging a hook, you can also install a bar on the ceiling which you can hang multiple plants from. Any type of wall mounted clothing rack should work for this purpose!
Another way to add more plants vertically without hanging them from the ceiling is to hang them on the wall. You can do this very easily if you buy the right pots. I bought a pack of hanging pots from Amazon, and hung them on the wall above my TV, bringing lots of greenery to the living room without taking up space. There are lots of options for wall mountable planters available! You can also opt to take a more creative route, and hang some type of ladder or lattice on your wall, and hang planters off of that. This example from Amazon is a lattice wall hanging that you can hang any of your wall mountable planters on using an S hook.
Another simple way to utilize your vertical space is to get a thin, but tall, plant stand. This may seem obvious, but I think it’s worth mentioning! Most of the plant shelves I see on Instagram are large, sometimes pyramid shaped, and while they look lovely, they would take up way too much space in a small apartment. There are options for tall, skinny plant stands! This stand from Amazon is only about a foot and a half wide, but has room for six plants. A plant shelf like that is a great option if you want to start growing your indoor jungle without taking up too much space.
So there you go, I hope this article gave you some ideas about how to fit more plants in your small space. Happy planting!
