I recently propagated a money tree for the first time. My money tree was clearly dying, but it had some fresh growth sprouting up from the bottom of it’s trunk. I had never propagated a money tree before, and couldn’t really find a lot of information about it online, but the tree was going to die anyway, so I decided to give it a shot. To my surprise and delight, it worked! In this blog post I outline exactly how to propagate a money tree.

I started by taking a cutting of the new growth. The most important thing when taking a cutting is to make sure your cutting includes a node. A node is the part of the stem that a leaf grows from. This is also where the new roots will grow! If you don’t have a node, the propagation won’t work.

Once I had a few good cuttings, I prepared a pot for them. I chose a planter that had enough space to plant each cutting a few inches apart. I filled it with soil and used a pencil to make a deep hole for each cutting.

Next, I put a little bit of rooting hormone on the nodes that would be beneath the soil. This step is not necessary, but might give your propagation a better chance of success. After applying the rooting hormone, I placed the cuttings in the holes, and then filled them in. Make sure each cutting has a node is in the soil!

After planting the cuttings, I gave the whole planter a good water. Moisture is essential for plants to propagate. I made sure to keep to soil most for a few weeks after planting the cutting. Money trees are pretty easy to overwater, but when they are just rooting, they need lots of water! It might feel wrong, but don’t let the soil dry out for at least a few weeks.

After about four weeks, I could see roots poking out of the drainage holes of my planter! This is when I knew it was time to switch to a more regular money tree watering routine. Of course, it will be a long time until my new money trees looks like trees, but they are healthy and thriving!

Summary of how to propagate a money tree:

  1. Take cuttings that include a node
  2. Fill a planter with soil, and use a pencil to make deep, narrow holes for each cutting
  3. Place rooting hormone on the nodes that will be beneath the soil (this step is optional)
  4. Place one cutting in each hole, making sure each cutting has a node in the soil
  5. Water the planter thoroughly
  6. Keep the planter with the cuttings moist for a few weeks
